Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by Joseph O — 12 Mar 2008
As far as old gangster pictures go, this one is the pinnacle. Of Muni, Robinson, and Cagney, Cagney was the best. Fun to watch Tom Powers be a salacious character even as a child. Though the ending wasn't a surprise (as is the case with all gangster films made during the Production Code), the execution of the story more than kept me interested. I was also a little shocked at how violent and bleak it was for a gangster movie of its time.
Bottom Line: Of all the 1930's mob films, this one is the best. If you only watch one, make it this one.
