Review of The Proposition (2005) by Remi V L — 04 Oct 2008
It took me awhile to get used to this one. It has a certain 'There Will Be Blood' quality about it that can hinder its reception if you go into this with the wrong expectations. That said im surprised I hadnt reviewed this one this one earlier (i saw it almost a year ago and didnt think much of it at the time).
But...now that ive had a chance to reexperience it, my fondness has only grown. Like many neo-westerns this one is extremely dark and brooding. A pure psychological venture that jolts you awake with scenes of utmost savagery and carnage.
Even the music is eerily distinct and moody: setting a perfect tone for this outback morality tale--hard to believe that Nick Cave wrote the screenplay AND the music for this one. Hillcoat's references to Cormac McCarthy's work too is also very evident and anyone who has read Blood Meridian will immediately be sucked in.
I can't wait to see what he does with "The Road".
