Review of The Prophecy (1995) by Tyler M — 21 Dec 2007
Homo-ertocism... And Chris Walken... Yeah, I said it.
Okay, so I watched this movie the other night hoping to see a good religious thriller, because as we all know, I love a good religious thriller...This is what I got...
The Story: Gabriel, an angel jealous of Gods love for humans, comes to earth seeking the most evil soul in existence. The only problem is that it's been hidden in the body of a little girl...Yeah, I know it sounds really wierd and implausible...But that's only because it is...It moves at a slow to moderate pace and has a fairly interesting story. The problem I have with this one is, that it moves from stylish, to not so stylish. It's not really all that spooky or creepy. The cinematography is pretty good, there's a lot of great shots and camera angles, but a movie like this calls for lowlight photography and a good creepy atmosphere, both of which are absent. Also, there is a really strange homo-erotic vibe between all the angels, it's just a little...Strange...And there's a few moments where, you'll just want to say, "what the F***? How did they ever get away with that?" That's more in reference to the part where Simon, the good angel hides the soul in the little girls body...It's just a strange scene of questionable nature.
The Cast: Christopher Walken, Elias Koteas...It's not Christopher Walkens best work, but he's the only one that really fits the bill for the character of Gabriel. He's good, not amazing, not great, but still good. His trademark voice and interesting mannerisms make him a memorable character here. Elias Koteas also shows up here, as a priest turned cop out to stop Gabriel from getting the soul he seaks. He's a great actor in other movies, but here he's just barely above average and not really too memorable. The script like the acting here, ranges from good, to mediocre, to cheesy.
One to Five Scale: 3.
It's general lack of atmosphere drags this one down, it could have been so much better. If you're looking for a good spooky religious thriller, look elsewhere because it's just not here.
Tyler.
