Review of The Promise (2016) by Spenser C — 21 Apr 2017
A terrific showcase of tragedy, perseverance, love, and forgiveness. The so-called "love triangle" has been widely criticized, but it works wonders to the effect of grounding us intimately into the story.
So much emotion is invested in these characters by the time real mortal conflict is introduced that we feel along with them, especially in the face of great loss. Not only are the performances great across the board, but the cinematography in this film is stunning; ranging from the look of 60's cinema epics, to classic baroque gospel paintings.
If one is focused solely on this technical aspects of this film, however, they miss the greatest messages that have been put on screen in a long while. Soften your heart and be willing to sympathize and this movie will enrich your life with a broader perspective and deeper love for those who face affliction.
