Review of The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939) by Cameron M — 02 May 2007
So much better than Davis's second outing as Liz the 1st (The Virgin Queen). She said that she never rated Errol Flynn as a dramatic actor, but upon watching this years and years later, decided that he was actually rather good after all! I have to agree.
The part would just be flat if played by anyone else of the time - including Olivier. He just didn't have the star-power that Flynn did. A classic.
