Review of The Prince of Tides (1991) by Lynda M — 24 Feb 2009
Nick Nolte's Oscar-caliber performance is enough reason to see this Barbra Streisand-directed movie adaptation of Pat Conroy's fantastic novel (one of my favourites). Since I love the book so much, I sorely miss the emphasis that the book puts on the main characters' background story.
The film focuses mainly on the Lowenstein/Tom-relationship in present day New York, and does so with good pacing, beautiful music, and respect for the wounded souls it is depicting. A few too many cardboard supporting characters and not enough about Tom's brother Luke - but a stellar performance mainly by Nolte and Kate Nelligan, who plays both young and old with flawless grace and ease.
