Review of The Power of One (1992) by Steve W — 03 Aug 2008
I've watched this twice and hated it with a passion both times. The valiant absurdity of the main character's politically correct "fight against racism" drives me insane. Peekay, you live in apartheid South Africa, why do you keep wasting your time with a bunch of natives.
Everytime he does something to defy logic of the day I got the constant impression that he is trying to impress people of the 90's. I also hate the juxtaposition between the stereotypical Nazi movie image and Peekay's "Goodness".
When Hitler took power people didn't suddenly turn violently racist (the scene where Peekay's chicken gets lynched comes to mind). Hell, Hitler even considered the British "aryans". Historical accuracy often takes a back seat when it comes to Nazis especially in movies that are not thought out.
Yes, they were evil but the average person was not out of control. Good job director ... on failing.
