Review of The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) by Sean J — 30 Nov 2018
Christmas is just around the corner, but that doesn't mean we can't have one last Halloween treat (especially since, where I live, it looks more like Fall than Winter)!
THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE.
At about 90 minuets, this supernatural cop drama is a bit too tame & by the book, but harmless. It flowed fairly steadily, & it didn't have any pointless filler.
The cast did alright. Shay Mitchell & Grey Damon gave their characters, an ex cop with a ton of old baggage & a drug problem, & her cop ex boyfriend, a decent amount of somber, lifetime movie realness that made you care just enough about them, & framing the ordeal they go through like a mirror of their internal struggle. Kirby Johnson really stood out as the villain, it takes real commitment to play not only someone suffering from demonic possession, but a naked corps that's still possessed! The way she moved, without any CGI, coupled with decent sound effects, made for a very visceral portrayal. She really was this film's star. The rest of the cast rounded things out well. They supported the main cast, & gave the villain a chance to be monstrous.
The real star of the show was the setting. The film took place in a morgue, but it didn't feel like a morgue. It looked & felt like some kinda ancient tomb, someplace where humans were unwelcome. That, plus the mood lighting, motion sensor lights that came on & off whenever, & lack of a real music score, just letting the quiet speak volumes, helped keep the level of in-your-guts dread high.
Overall, I wouldn't put The Possession of Hannah Grace on any top 10 lists, but it isn't the worst way to kill an hour & a half. It would've been better, had they pushed it a bit farther, but it was still enjoyable in it's own way. 3 stars outta 5, special thanks to Kirby Johnson; IMHO, she stands along side the likes of Linda Blair & Jennifer Carpenter as the believably possessed.
