Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Cal ( — 23 Nov 2007
An imaginative and original disaster film of the '70s with superb effects and fantastic production design! Primarily the film is set on New Year's Eve aboard a vessel known as the Poseidon. Just as New Year's Day comes around a bulky wave strikes the ship and subsequently capsizes it; killing lots and wounding many others.
A preacher aboard the ship (Hackman) takes charge and endeavours to get the survivors to safety. Being a disaster film there's always the clichéd moments when people refuse to move and are killed as a result.
Also there are the corny moments when people are too scared to move that endangers the lives of the rest of the survivors. The ending was a little lacklustre and incomplete, but the middle of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, and it's an Oscar well earnt. Overall a good and innovative film, it's just a little out-dated by today's standards. Followed by a sequel, remade in 2005 as a TV movie and remade in 2006 as a big theatrical release.
