(1972) The Poseidon Adventure.
SUSPENSE DRAMA.
The first of three versions about the sinking of the Poseidon originally based on a novel written by Paul Gallico which the movie centers on the few verses many. What's to expect regarding the set up which centers on an ocean liner ship tipping over spending the entire movie about reaching to it's safest passage headed by a person they call the preacher played by Gene Hackman. Some of the great things done on this version that are often missing from other movies is it's authenticity within the characters which was lacking in any shipwrecked movie made before like a character who does not know how to swim and the arguing about which routes to go to. Like all disaster movies should expect some losses but the way the last character was killed was beyond ridiculous. With great acting by Hackman, Shelly Winters, Roddy McDowell and Ernst Borgerine makes this version much pleasing to watch. I couldn't decide whether this film deserved a 70% or an 80% but as a result of looking at other ship wrecked movies- I think this one is the best -fictionalize or otherwise.
3 out of 4 stars.
