Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Gaspar O — 12 Nov 2013
Ryan Gosling's made a living out of playing characters that stare off into the distance and speak in poorly timed, monosyllabic grunts, and that's fine for him, but when he brings my man crush Bradley Cooper down to that level and he starts acting like a caveman, that's going too far.
This could have been much better with some directing, a couple hundred retakes and good editing, but as it is offered, it's kind of a hot mess. It's certainly not without merit, and star power helps it limp along, but it's definitely a watch only once kind of film.
And why is Ray Liotta, no matter the film, the scariest cop that ever lived?
