Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Henrik S — 12 Nov 2013
A powerful and gripping drama with such an unusual story structure, that alone will keep you interesed in the film, as it carefully - but without going overboard - steers clear of Hollywood clichees and the same old tricks.
The cast is stellar (even though I am not one of those who thinks Cooper has got hidden talents - he doesn't) but we all know that Gosling is a behemoth when it comes to young talents. The soundtrack, cinematography and bleak setting all combine into a haunting tale of Americana that mixes road-side romanticism with realism and skilful filmmaking.
Definitely a must-watch for everyone who is interested in alternatives within Hollywood and documents of Zeitgeist.
