Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Jwee Chiek E — 11 Feb 2014
The sins of the fathers will be felt in next generation or generations to come. This is the theme of this chillingly sombre movie brilliantly acted by Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling who played the two central father figures.
The sombre tone reminds me of another dark movie by Clint Eastwood - Mystic River. However 'The Place beyond the Pines' has a much happier ending. Despite having a criminal past, Gosling's son, AJ, who was briefly with his dead father, was able to feel his love from looking at a crumpled photo of him as a baby, Gosling and the mother during happy times.
The conscience of Bradley Cooper was finally set free when he knelt amongst the pine forest and begged for AJ's forgiveness for shooting his father (Ryan Gosling) the bank robber. More killings were averted and AJ rode off into the sunset on a motor bike.
Just like his father, Ryan Gosling. Hollywood ending for you.
