Review of The Pirate (1948) by Giffy G — 29 Nov 2007
The song and dance numbers were amazing. I was hesitant solely because I think Cole Porter--while a great musician--should have hired a lyricist. The lyrics to songs like "Mack the Black" were laughable.
Although, I had to eat my own words the next day when it was still stuck in my head. Gene Kelly is gorgeous, Judy Garland is amazing... it was the plot I could have done without. I've been told by people whose opinions I trust that if I were to watch the movie as if it was one continuous musical number I would have a different reaction.
The song and dance numbers are enough to get me to watch the movie again, so I'll withhold more judgments until I've had a second viewing.
