Review of The Pirate (1948) by Chelsea — 24 Jan 2009
I wanted to like this movie, but I couldn't. It was too exotic and lavish for me and Kelly didn't make a good Spaniard in tight-pants. The dancing was definitely different (no tap in the 1800s) and that was refreshing, it was nice seeing Kelly doing mostly ballet stuff.
The Nicholas Brothers trio with Kelly was impressive, but too flashy and acrobatic and not too artistic. It had its quick humorous moments, but it wasn't enough to make up for my dissatisfaction. Poor MGM.
