Review of The Pink Panther (1963) by Brendan N — 16 Nov 2012
The whole film is stolen by sellers who becomes Inspector Clouseau. What is suppose to be a heist film with some humour is saved by Sellers. the film has a well rounded cast and does well for the most part. the only real let down is the film fails to create any real laughs for its main star.
Blake Edwards creates a fine looking film with a fun chase scene and party scene. the film is uneven in its humour and story department but if you are not here for a pure comedy you'll enjoy the slow burning plot. Edwards would create better Pink Panther films following this but the plot is essentially a complicated heist going wrong.
Sellers in a supporting role is superb as Clouseau which would become he's most iconic role. the film basically lacks humour when he is off screen which does create a slight boredom with the film. Niven is fine in the lead and gives a well rounded performance. the film is well cast but cannot overcome Sellers who is just too funny for a supporting role.
The climatic chase scene is superb and very funy. I know there are much funnier pink panther films but this is still a classic in its own right. Edwards created a character of real substance to audiences and would provide for some greater films to follow. Sellers really stole the film and created something special.
