Review of The Pianist (2002) by Jeff B — 09 Mar 2011
Szpilman annoyed me with how he continually ruined the good hiding spots he'd found by making a lot of noise. The main plot point comes about 3/4 through the film, so most of it is just him trying to survive the various attacks on people.
The way the film displays these attacks are often very good, but that doesn't make up for the fact that a lot of nothing is happening to the character for the majority of the film. Also, he doesn't really have much of a character to begin with--all we know is that he's a pianist, he's a Polish Jew, and he apparently doesn't care enough to remember people he worked with at his only job.
I don't know. It might have been the influence of Adrien Brody, but I just didn't care for his character at all. He was a helpless child and a foolish and selfish one at that. The visuals (and soundtrack) do not make up for the fact that the plot is very thin in this film.
