Review of The Phantom Tollbooth (1970) by Tim S — 06 Jan 2015
I remember The Phantom Tollbooth being a favorite book of mine when I was a kid, but to tell you the truth, I couldn't remember very much about it. I remembered the talking dog and the kid, and that's about it.
I never saw the animated version of it either. That being said, I didn't find much to like about this film. I'm not particularly fond of the character designs and I think they're more suited for Chuck Jones' cartoon shorts rather than a full-length movie, especially the facial designs.
And the movie, while relatively short, feels its length almost the entire running time. I just wanted it to end, frankly. I know it's beloved favorite of many people, especially those who saw it when they were kids, but I just didn't care for it.
It has its place, which is for nostalgia mainly, but overall, it's not something I'd say I have the desire to go back and revisit in the future.
