Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Matthew M — 12 Mar 2012
It's an impressive spectacle, and, for that, it deserves some praise. But where it comes into its own is its beautiful visual style, its stunning cinematography and its high regard for the source material from which it comes.
Schumacher directs with such flair that the film overcomes its uneven and overlong plot, the leads managing to keep a superb sexual chemistry between them whilst Butler deserves extra praise for simply doing something different and succeeding at it; his performance is phenomenal.
The set design and costumes are impeccable and the music, as always, is spectacular - the whole thing manages to come together, despite all the flash and melodrama, pretty well, and although there are some faults, it's pretty much a brilliant film that most will enjoy.
