Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by William Z — 12 Apr 2012
As much as I am not fond of Andrew Lloyd Webber, "The Phantom of the Opera" as a movie does not work for several other reasons, primarily the really bad singing of Gerard Butler, the lack of sheer emotional intensity between our two lead characters, and the fact that it reeks of pretentiousness without any real gravity to back it up.
The reason why shows like "Les Miserables" and "A Chorus Line" are successful is because even though they "talk the talk," they also (more importantly) can "walk the walk.
" Aside from great musical composition, the characters really grow and develop with us, so when someone dies, we feel affected. When the Phantom has his mask ripped off, we don't care at all. For fans of the real-life musical, "The Phantom of the Opera" I think will either really please or really hate this version.
At the very least, the sets and costumes look spectacular, and "Masquerade" isn't all that bad a number. 1.5/4 stars.
