I've now seen the stage musical and the movie in the space of 8 months and I have to say I prefer the stage version. Seeing the spectacular sets and hearing the music live adds something that the movie lacks, the tension and vibrancy of a live performance. Don't get me wrong, the movie is very good, and is a faithful reproduction of the stage musical. But film is a different medium and sometimes calls for a less-faithful adaptation. The film feels long. And the story still confuses me somewhat; the characters' backstory is revealed at odd times and in odd ways. The framing device of the auction at least adds more closure than it did in the stage musical. The sets and costumes are outstanding. The music is somewhat repetitive. If you have a choice, see the stage version.
