Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Meredith W — 08 Jul 2014
"The Phantom of the Opera" started off terribly. It was boring, the set and costumes were overdone, and we were expected to believe in characters that we had almost no emotional tie to. It didn't help that many of the lyrics were tough to understand and that the writers felt like every line needed to be sung.
However, once we reached the scene in the graveyard, things started to pick up. The music started getting better and more emotional, the action began to quicken, and finally things began to happen. The closing scene left the viewer powerfully conflicted, because a part of them felt pity, sorrow, and love for the Phantom, and yet all of us knew that Christine was making the right choice.
Having not seen other versions of this movie, I cannot comment for sure, but I must question if there are not better renditions to be seen.
