Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Rachel D — 22 Apr 2015
This movie is able to bring to life elements that can't be done on stage but the Phantom is better portrayed in the Royal Albert Hall stage version. There are parts in each that I like and dislike so I keep both movies.
Somehow in the movie Gerard's Phantom comes off a lot creepier than the stage Phantom which could have been because it's easier to choose between black and white instead of having Sympathy for the Devil like they did with Hannibal.
I love how they did the journey to the Phantom's lair in the movie and it gives me a chill in a good way while on stage they have to "pretend" journey in the scaffold over the stage. The ending in the stage performance made me cry and the movie didn't.
So my little set of the two makes a happy whole for me.
