Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1962) by Jason R — 08 Nov 2009
Hammer's version of the Phantom of the Opera is set in London and (like many versions) changes aspects of the novel's plot. The movie was allegedly written with Cary Grant in mind when Grant wanted to do a horror film, but the role of Grant is debated (some say he wanted to be the Phantom, others say the romantic lead).
The movie like many of Hammer's productions, seems bright, clean, but somehow cheap at the same time.
