Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Søren I — 10 Feb 2008
Not exactly great art and not exactly subtle, but as a piece of sensational spectacle it doesn't get much better than the original "The Phantom of the Opera". Certainly Murnau's "Nosferatu" is a superior work, but this film retains a level of creepiness that even exceeds "Nosferatu" at times.
Lon Chaney's performance and make-up is still impressive to this day, and the mask removal scene is unforgettable.
