Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Mike G — 15 Aug 2011
Just caught this on TCM the other night, a restored version and as creepy in its silence as any movie I can think of. Lon Chaney could not be outdone in this performance, it's incredibly creepy and scary to this day and all created by him the man of a thousand faces.
And it's just weird! It looks strange, the sets are expressionistically bathed in foggy diffused light and wind, waters and reflections. At this late date, some 86 years later, it's astonishing and bizarre.
