Review of The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (2006) by Benjamin V — 23 Aug 2007
This is one of the most interactive and engaging works in cinematic theory that I have ever seen. As a viewer interested in theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, the ways in which Sophie Fiennes and Slavoj Zizek present material which is normally inaccessible in a creative way makes for an intellectually stimulating work.
I would suggest this movie both outside and inside the classroom, but the viewers should know that some of the ideas presented are somewhat difficult to follow on a first-time view; but similarly, this movie is not for those who consider pieces such as '50 First Dates' or 'Pretty Woman' intellectually engaging cinema.
Hitchcock, Lynch, Kieslowski, and works by other renowned directors are discussed and enjoyed. Four stars from me.
