Review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Ann D — 05 Aug 2010
I like The People Under the Stairs more than I should. It's one of the weirdest horror movies I've ever seen, but I enjoyed its blend of horror, humor, and gore. The plot is so outlandish that it could be a kids movie along the lines of Home Alone if there weren't so much blood and swearing.
I went into this movie with no prior knowledge, other than it was written and directed by master of horror Wes Craven. I think that helped because I did not know what to expect from it... and it threw me for a loop.
The movie's protagonist is a black 13 year old; not something you see too often in horror (if ever). I know that there are huge flaws with this movie (like the shotgun having an infinite number of shells, really useless cops, and hysterically inept villains), but I was never bored for a second.
It was a campy, stylized, and effective thriller with the main character being trapped in a maze. I recommend it, but The People Under the Stairs is not for everyone; it reaches cult classic status.
