Review of The Palm Beach Story (1942) by Pei Yee W — 25 Nov 2008
Preston Sturges is insane. I love that the opening scene of this is the ending of an entirely different film...or am I interpreting it wrong. Anyway,it's utterly brilliant. The story is inventive and highly imaginative from the start.
The ending warrants a "wtf" type phrase but you don't even care how crazy it is. You just go along with this fun and zany ride. The performances are all excellent. I loved everyone but Rudy Vallee was the true standout for me.
His portrayal of this wealthy man avoids the regular cliches. That's part of Struges' amazing script but Vallee brings something else to the table. I can't pin point it but if you've seen this then you know what I'm talking about.
Though,I'm still not big on Sullivan's Travels,Sturges has created two of the funniest and most surprising romantic comedies I've ever seen. The other being The Lady Eve,of course.
