Review of The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) by John A — 10 Apr 2009
An interesting and thoughtful film, though a bit ponderous and didactic. Wellman's compositions often catch the eye--a tree branch, a rope swinging, the brim of a cowboy hat. Yet everything seems a bit too staged.
It's a disturbing milieu for sure, but without the narrative drive or the flat out embrace of a more poetic rendering, its flaws stand out all the more.
