Review of The Onion Movie (2008) by Jason S — 22 Jul 2008
I want to start off by saying that I am a huge fan of the Onion. I've read it religiously since 2000 and had to see this movie even though the movie was scrapped and the people who finished the film had nothing to do with the Onion.
This movie was released 5 years after they finished filming it. My expectations were not too high.
Rodney Dangerfield had a cameo in this movie. Rodney Dangerfield died in fucking 2004! This movie just came out this year! and to think that the final line of his film career was "Everyone's getting laid!".
Anyway, some of the sketches were hilarious, some were decent, and most were really fucking awful. I'm talking "Not another Teen Movie" awful. The Onion name has been dragged through the mud a bit in this film. The satire is weak compared to the website and there basically is no plot to this movie.
I'm giving this movie two stars though there are some 4 star moments where I laughed outloud. To be fair, I guess the Onion website is Hit or Miss as well. There's about 20 minutes of solid material here. The rest is worse than "Scary Movie 3".
