The Omen is one of those movies that could easily have been a throwaway film, but the style and acting managed to push it into a decent film. The effects (some of them even very minimal) still look good and the crazy deaths in The Omen only got more extreme in the sequels.
The Omen, of course, was the victim of an unnecessary remake but also the success of original The Omen help build the finances for Star Wars.
