Review of The Omen (1976) by Rachael H — 20 Sep 2010
Lately I've found myself disappointed by horror flics that are based entirely on Catholic or Christian theology. They usually fall short as horror because too much time is spent reading tea leaves and not enough time producing actual suspense and thrills.
Even when interesting historical or theological context is displayed, it's usually not explained. Such is the case with this movie. There is an added insult - the movie ends with an obvious setup for uninteresting sequels.
Despite all this, it's still a little fun to watch, as it's got some delicious melodrama and overacting. Its style is ominous (speaking of omens) and dark.
