Review of The Object of My Affection (1998) by Lane W — 25 Mar 2009
I don't understand all the flack this movie gets. Wendy Wasserstein (a brilliant playwright, incidentally) has crafted a deft screenplay that is far and beyond anything that could be considered a romantic comedy, while still maintaining the typical components.
It is fascinating to watch Aniston's character fall hopelessly for Rudd's, and her subsequent unraveling is well-acted and performed without any sense of her past characters, or the role she was playing concurrently with the filming of this movie.
Rudd is charming, unprepossessing, and natural in a role completely unlike nearly everything he has played since. Hytner's direction is simplistic, but conveys the story, and isn't that the point? One of the best things about this movie is that it doesn't pander to an ending that is expected, it ends as it should, and would in the real world, though there are loose ends with Rudd's character.
Really a pretty good film, though.
