Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Jessica W — 26 May 2012
I was expecting a supernatural thriller. The first 30 minutes of this movie has some promise with a nice prologue and interesting character by Johnny Depp. Then, the movie goes nowhere. Depp's character travels a lot, but the movie has no direction.
I heard that director Roman Polanski was sued on allegations of pocketing $1 million of the movie's budget. I really think Polanski's reward came from with a Best Director Oscar for The Pianist.
To go from a movie this boring to a movie that well made deserves some type of award. This movie doesn't know if it wants to be a film noir, dark comedy, supernatural thriller or horror. It's none really.
The movie's ending hints that a main character might be the devil incarnate, but just ends with a fade to white.
