Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Dan O — 21 Jan 2013
Film makers often talk about creating mood and atmosphere: this movie is quite exemplary in that regard. The film is a quiet and patient dirge, building intrigue and suspense as the mystery surrounding a satanic tome slowly unravels.
Very few films that are this slowly paced are as riveting or as enjoyable upon repeat viewing. Johnny Depp is quite good here, crafting a restrained and layered performance that perfectly encapsulates Corso's gradual shift from skeptical disinterest to cold, calculating resolve.
The score is absolutely haunting and the film itself is one of Polanski's finest recent efforts.
