Review of The Ninth Configuration (1980) by Corey B — 16 Sep 2009
A frustrating movie that is ultimately quite affecting. It takes a long, long time to get into it though, mostly because the tone is all over the map. The opening scenes have the stoic Keach trying to reach out to the wacky inmates.
It's played at such a broad comic level for such a long time that the movie seems to go nowhere. But when it settles down, the thematic threads that Blatty has put in place do pay off and several scenes are very intense (a barroom confrontation is especially well done).
