Review of The Nines (2007) by Dickie L — 10 May 2009
It would be easy to dismiss this as a piece of shit.
Oh what the hell, its a piece of shit.
It's not quite the indulgent mess that Southland Tales is, but its still an impenetrable excercise that ultimately offers little. I have to admit though, for much of its length I was hanging in there for some pay-off to the parallel universe puzzle, but the ending was just a cop out.
Maybe some people with think this is a clever critique of the self-absorbed L.A. lifestyle, but having seen Synecdoche New York the day before, this just isn't in the same league (or maybe New Yorkers are just more interesting).
Strange that Hope Davis is in both films playing very similar characters.
