Mitchum and Gish command the screen in this powerful, stylish and moving thriller. An occasionally flawed narrative prevents this film from being one of the ultimate greats of cinema. It's not quite in the class of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' or 'Cape Fear', but it comes close.
