Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Janice S — 05 Nov 2017
What a riveting, what a beautiful bad dream 'The Night of the Hunter' is. It's magnetic, magnificently crafted - suspenseful, pure noir, powerful, handsome -Laughton's only directing effort is a work that even accomplished directors can dream of, being how superbly beautiful.
Robert Mitchum is an electric antihero in this tale of "love" and "hate", good and evil which has an astounding set-up and consequently is frightening. Visually taking full advantage of its gorgeous black and white, 'The Night of the Hunter' magnifies its beautiful shots of the South, the river especially.
Moreover, the film has in its style shades of Hitchcock's best works ('Shadow of a Doubt' most particularly), and is piercing, exciting, mysteriously mesmerizing and bewitching.
