Review of The Next Best Thing (2000) by Robert W — 19 Sep 2009
It's pretty much a mish-mash of every single melodramatic cliche you can think of with the gay daddy aspect thrown in for good measure. The problem is that the filmmakers think that just because Robert is gay and that makes them an alternative family, it will, in turn make the movie more substantial. It doesn't, especially with the third-act "twist" that is probably the most unnecesarry thing ever.
All that being said, though, I strangely enjoyed it. It's like a giant pile-up on the freeway that you can't take your eyes off of because you're dying to know what happens next. I doubt Madonna intended for her movie to be compared to a car accident.
