Review of The New World (2005) by Brad S — 28 Jan 2010
They?re coming.
John Smith is part of a maiden pilgrimage traveling west to find a shortcut to the West Indies; instead, he runs into America where the natives are at first hospitable and then plain hostile. John is sent alone into the wilderness to find resources and the next step in their voyage. He encounters an Indian tribe where the chief?s daughter is offered to him as a bride. The chief hopes his daughter can signify peace to the white man and help bridge the gap between cultures. Unfortunately, war ensues and the daughter?s hopes and dreams are dashed as she struggles for survival and happiness.
?Don?t trust me. You don?t know who I am.?
Terrance Malick, director of Badlands, Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line, and the upcoming The Tree of Life (Brad Pitt and Sean Penn), delivers The New World. The storyline for this picture is magnificent and well executed. The film is a bit long, just under 150 minutes, but the characters are remarkable and well presented. The acting was solid and the cast included Christian Bale, Collin Farrell, and Q?orianka Kilcher (who stole the show).
?We have lost the favor of the naturals.?
Despite the long run time of this movie, the movie surprisingly flew by. The characters were fascinating and the story was brilliant. I also enjoyed the setting and Q?orianka Kilcher?s performance; however, the film seemed to be missing something. While the conclusion was sad, I still left the film thinking it was not as food as it should have been. This is an above average film that is definitely worth watching, but I would not recommend purchasing this DVD for your collection.
?Cut off his ear.?
Grade: C+.
