Review of The New World (2005) by Jonny C — 21 Mar 2010
I thought the regular version was pretty good, but I just finished the "Extended Cut" that was 3 hours, and it was even better. Malick's films don't really show what is going on externally, but you hear and see what each character is thinking as the story progresses so your sense of time and space is thrown off, but isn't that what our day to day lives are like anyways? Half the time we are somewhere else in our minds.
Much like the Thin Red Line which was more about the battle within each soldier, the same goes for this. Each character experiences something so alien that they are transformed. So I suppose the "new world" means a changing consciousness.
I think my favourite thing is not one light was used in the entire film. Shot entirely with natural light. NOW that is impressive.
