Review of The New World (2005) by Bill C — 10 May 2013
Just as Princess Pocahontas' love for John Rolfe grows from hopelessness and despair into strength and maturity, our early uncertainty with this film turns into admiration and awe. The Rolfe's return to England is as much a revelation for us as it is for Pocahontas. Through her eyes, we too see the wonders of London for the first time.
Production designer Jack Fisk once again plies his trade to perfection.
Much like Sissy Spacek ( Badlands ) and Linda Manz ( Days Of Heaven ) before her, newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher is mesmerizing. I am pleasantly reminded of the acting debut of Rita Coolidge in Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid.
As much poetry as cinema; the 172 minute BRD "extended cut" is compelling !
