Review of The New Daughter (2009) by Miguel P — 08 Jun 2010
I was curious to see what Ivana Baquero was up to. She is a captivating young actress but this was definitely a step way down from the outstanding Pan's Labyrinth performance that put her on the map.
The acting in The New Daughter is fine (Kevin Costner is more watchable than expected as the befuddled single dad and little Gattlin Griffith makes for an adorable kid brother) but the story is very formulaic; a family moves into a big, creepy old house in the middle of nowhere and, lo and behold, strange things start to happen.
Swap out the usual ghosts with Native American zombie mummy gods and you've got yourself a Hollywood haunting. At least the ending was unexpected, and it gave me a good, hard laugh.
