Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Kirstie K — 17 May 2017
Ah, The Neon Demon. Highly stylised and insightful into the world of fashion, it nevertheless loses almost all of its appeal the moment it starts getting into the bizarre and grotesque. Its biggest crime is the blatant 'shock factor' attempts over actual context and plot.
Murder? Sure. Bathing in blood? Historical context. When you start getting into cannibalism and necrophilia, you really need to start asking yourself if chasing the audience's discomfort is the sole purpose of your movie.
One of these things can be woven into a movie, two at a push, but there honestly becomes a point where you go beyond discomfort and into utter boredom.
