Review of The Natural (1984) by Gino P — 01 Jun 2010
Quite simply the best sports film ever made the film also manages to capture a segment of America down to the very finest detail as well as a segment that is lost to us now. I think it is Levinson's very unique vision and ability as a director that captures this, probably more so than anyone since Capra.
Redford gives his usual great performance and belies the title role to a tee. He is the all American boy. Close and Basinger also give great turns as his two love interests as do all the other supporting roles.
The production design flawlessly captures the thirties and the score, well the score is otherworldly. There are five to six moments within the film that give you chills and it is one of those that you will stop and watch no matter where you are, at any point in the film.
