Review of The Natural (1984) by Johnathon W — 13 Feb 2018
Solid but sentimental film that while overly long, does have some magical moments. Redford is solid in the lead, believably playing a middle-aged ballplayer who still has some stuff left while providing some hints to a darker past.
He gets great support from the rest of the cast, particularly Wilford Brimley & Richard Farnsworth as he cranky baseball managers. Behind the camera, Barry Levinson directs a mostly faithful adaptation of the classic book, crafting some beautiful scenes that capture the mystique & look of this classic era of baseball.
He does veer close to cheesy at times, and the film is a bit long in the middle. Randy Newman's score remains iconic, along with Caleb Deschanel's brilliant cinematography, and the final scene is a true classic.
Overall, not quite a hall of fame movie, but it definitely has some hall of fame moments.
