Review of The Natural (1984) by Brian K — 09 Apr 2009
Period movies are very difficult to pull off. This one is a masterpiece.
The era of the late 1930's is as much of a character as the people themselves (ever wonder why not all camera shots are not focused directly on the characters themselves all of the time?). Everything from the dialogue to the costuming to the uniforms to the automobiles are part of the atmosphere. Beautifully scored and photographed, the movie is a winner all the way around. Combine all of this with a good story of a second chance made good, making the right choice, and love finally fulfilled, "pick me out a winner, Bobby.".
