Review of The Namesake (2006) by Sammy M — 30 Jul 2008
Endearing, familiar, and beautiful. Kal Penn was actually tolerable, and most everyone else was flawless. The movie is held back by a few scenes that miss the emotional mark, some strange soundtrack choices, and the inclusion of Jacinda Barrett.
In all other ways this film succeeds in a culturally rich, eye-opening way. It is surprisingly unpredictable in some ways, and heart-warmingly predictable in others. I have not read the book, so I can't draw a comparison there, though from what I hear it does not do the book justice.
But how often does a movie interpretation of a book really please those who enjoy the written version?
